Poke-X-mon
Episode two
Viridian Infiltration
"Whaddaya mean, 'I can't go in?'" demanded Chet.
"No trainer shall enter the Viridian Gym without at least seven
badges," the Roman-esque gaurd authoritatively claimed. "No
exceptions."
"No exceptions, eh?" Chet said calmly. "Well, then I guess I'll be
going then."
With that, Chet calmly walked away.
Then he ran back, attempting to charge past the gaurds. The gaurds
just grabbed him and tossed him back into the street. Chet skidded to
a stop next to a fire hydrant.
"No trainer shall enter the Viridian Gym without at least seven
badges," the Roman-esque gaurd authoritatively claimed. "No
exceptions."
"Yeah, yeah, I heardja the first time," Chet said, walking off down the
street.
Chet attempted to charge past the gaurds again, hoping to catch them
off gaurd. This time he went past the hydrant and into the gutter.
"No trainer shall..." the gaurd started.
"Seven badges, no exceptions," recited Chet, crossing the street. "I
got it. I got it."
Third time's the charm, Chet thought as he charged again.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
"Okay, three hundred and twenty-second time's the charm," Chet said.
In the bushes across the street from the Gym, Chet knealt in to a ready
position.
"On my mark, get set..."
Chance the Meowth handed Chet a piece of paper. On it was a crude
drawing of the Viridian Gym, with various misspelled landmarks. Lines,
arrows and stick figures labeled "You" and "Me" detailed a possible
point of entry in the ventialtion system by way of the alley. From
there, they would crawl through the air ducts while avoiding pitfalls,
giant fans, and alien monsters. They would then pop out in front of
another stick figure labeled "Jim Leder" near a cloud labeled "Fight."
"Who's Jim Leder?" Chet asked.
"Meowth meow! Meowth meow!" corrected Chance.
"Oh," said Chet, not really understanding what Chance said. "This is a
very excellent plan. There's just one thing I have to do first."
Chet, with a cry of "Bonzai!" leapt from the bushes and charged the
front entry again.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
"Well, who knew that air ducts were so small, eh, Chance?" Chet said as
he squoze his way through the metal passage. A very difficult process
when your body is covered with a stiff exoskeleton.
"Meowth meow," commented Chance, trying to push Chet through the duct.
Chet peered through a grate as he passed by it.
"Nah, that's the girl's locker room," Chet said as he moved on. He
then moved back with a clear view of two girls changing.
"We're almost ready to go," said a girl a long, blonde ponytail. She
was finishing up putting on baggy, black coverals and she had his back
turned towards him, so Chet wasn't paying too much attention to her.
"Are you sure?" an Asian girl with purple, shoulder-length hair that
was longer on one side asked. The longer side partially covered one of
her eyes. She had just come from the shower, Chet assumed, and was
only wearing a towel. He was definately watching her. "We can't have
any mistakes, Maxine. This operation has to go perfectly."
"Of course I'm sure," Maxine said looking through her
locker. "Anything the big-G can throw at us is covered, Hera. We've
got plenty of high-level flyers and water-types."
"Don't forget Giovanni's Nidoking," Hera reminded. "It knows electric
attacks."
"Don't worry about it. I got it covered."
"But-"
"I said it's covered."
Maxine but on a black hat and turned around, revealing the red "R" on
her chest. Chet almost exclaimed "Team Rocket!" Good thing he didn't,
or they might have noticed him.
"I've got it all taken care of," Maxine continued. "We'll take Giovanni
by surprise and strip him of his power. By this time tomorrow, we will
control Viridian City's Gym AND Giovanni's empire!"
Chet quickly crawled through the shaft, backed up to get a quick look
at Hera, then took off again. He had to warn Giovanni, who by now Chet
gathered was the Gym Leader. He couldn't let Team Rocket take over
someone's gym, even if they are an elitist bonehead who doesn't let
trainers with less than seven badges into their gym.
Moments later, Chet crashed through another grate and landed on
someone's desk. He found himself in the accusing gaze of a man in a
finely-cut Italian suit. Chance the Meowth fell on his face.
"Mr. Giovanni, I presume!" Chet announced through a face-full of Meowth.
"Yes," Giovanni said. "Now could you please explain to me who are and
why you are on my desk!?"
Chet got off the desk, removed Chance from his face and explained the
whole thing to Giovanni while trying not to sound like a pervert or
hint that he was a mutant. Giovanni sat back and listened, his fingers
steepled in interest.
"Hera and Maxine. I should've known," Giovanni said. "They have been
rather secretive lately." He got up, but his hands behind his back,
and made his way to the door. "You stay here. Make yourself
comfortable. I'll look into this."
"Make sure he doesn't leave this room," Giovanni said to his Persian
before leaving.
Chet could hear Giovanni talking to someone outside. Moments later he
could here the sound of many boots tromping down the halls, Giovanni
talking some more, then more tromping. A while after that, sounds of a
Pokemon battle could be heard. Probably Giovanni in a badge battle,
Chet thought. After about an hour, Giovanni returned.
"I'd like to thank you for exposing this plot to over-throw me,"
Giovanni said. "Is there anything I could do for you in return?"
"Well, I was going to challenge you for the Earth Badge..." Chet
answered.
Giovanni laughed out loud.
"You think you can get an Earth Badge just by doing me a favor?"
Giovanni said. "How many badges you got, boy?"
"Uh, none," Chet admitted.
"I'm afraid it's against Gym policy to give up badges without a fight,"
Giovanni said apologeticly.
"Then I guess I'll have to put up a fight," Chet responded threantingly.
Giovanni chuckled.
"I like your style," Giovanni said, putting an arm over Chet's
shoulder. "You remind me of me when I was your age. Come with me."
As Giovanni led Chet out of his office, he turned to his secretary and
said, "Have Bon, Ian and Clyde meet us in the arena. Tell them its a
causual affair."
"You've got a lot of guts," Giovanni continued. "I like that. You
also have excellent taste in Pokemon," he added, in regards to Chance
the Meowth. "That's why I'm going to give you an oppurtunity to prove
yourself worthy of a battle for the Earth Badge. If you can defeat an
opponent of my chosing, maybe, just maybe, I'll let you take me on for
the badge tomorrow. Whaddaya say?"
"Uh, thanks Mr. Giovanni," Chet answered. "I don't know what to say."
"Think nothing of it. It's the least I can do."
At the end of the hallway, Giovanni lead Chet through a door. This
door led to a balcony overlooking the arena. Chet had seen battle
arenas before, but none nearly this size. It was immense, with two
elevated platforms for the trainers to stand on.
Standing in the middle of this arena were three more trainers. One was
large, grungey, badly dressed, and carrying a guitar. Another wore big
glasses and hadn't tucked his shirt in all the way. The third was a
girl, with incredibly long hair and a short skirt.
"Yo, boss," the large, grungey one said. "Whassup?"
"Whassssaaaaaap!?" the one with glasses added.
"Yes, we've all seen that commercial," Giovanni said. "But as much as
we all love that gimmick, I'm afraid I have a task for you."
"Sure, what do you want us to do?" the girl asked.
"I want Ian to take on our new friend here using his new team,"
Giovanni instructed.
"My team, sir?" Ian, the one in glasses, said. "But I haven't worked
all the kinks out yet, sir. In fact, I only have three Pokemon."
"I'm sure they'll do fine," Giovanni said, sitting in a nearby
throne. "Now, everyone to their places and let the match begin!"
Everyone got to their places. The other two stood at the sidelines.
Not expecting this match to go well, Ian decided to toss out his
Pokemon first.
"Diglett, go!" Ian called. Diglett appeared in a flash of light.
Chet pulled out his Pokedex.
"Diglett," reported the Pokedex. "The mole Pokemon. Lives almost
entirely underground. Diglett is a ground-type Pokemon."
Chet had spent a bit of time studying strengths and weaknesses of
different types some time ago. He remembered that one of the
weaknesses of ground-types was water, and he happened to have one handy.
"Go, Flak!" Chet announced. The ball hit the ground and opened.
Nothing happened. "What the...? Where is he?"
"Unless Flak's a ghost Pokemon, I suggest you try a different monster,"
Ian recommened. Chance retrieved the ball.
"I'll have to figure out how he did that," said Chet as he pulled
another ball from his belt. "In the meantime, go Doom!"
Doom the Spearow launched out of the Pokeball.
"All right! Peck attack, Doom!"
"Dig attack, Diglett!"
Doom made a nosedive for the Diglett. The diglett dove underground.
"He's giving supernerds everywhere a bad name," the girl, Bon,
commented.
"Hey, I paniced, okay?" retorted Ian. "Gimme a break!"
The Diglett popped up underneath where Doom was hovering. Doom quickly
reached down and Pecked the mole on the head.
"Scratch attack, Diglett!"
"Just keep Pecking him!"
The Diglett swiped a super-fast claw at Doom, who pecked at his
opponent like a woodpecker. The Diglett didn't last much longer.
"That went about as well as I expected," noted Ian, recalling his
Diglett. "Next up is... Cubone!"
"Cubone! Buh-bone-bone!" remarked the Cubone after it appeared.
"All right Doom, Peck that Cubone!"
Doom swooped towards the Cubone.
"Cubone, batter up!"
The Cubone swung its bat as Doom swooped in and sent him flying into
Chet's platform. Doom slid down to the floor.
"Cu bone-bone!" the Cubone taunted.
"Attack him again, Doom!"
"Beat 'em down, Cubone!"
Cubone walked over to Doom. Doom shakily climbed to his feet, only to
be knocked down by Cubone.
"Bone!" the Cubone taunted. Doom tried to get up again, but was knocked
back down and spat upon by Cubone. Chet brought Doom back into his
Pokeball.
"That Cubone's got a bad attitude," Chet said. "Teach him some
manners, Chance!"
Chance vaulted over the gaurdrail on Chet's platform and landed on
Cubone, biting and scratching. The Cubone bucked Chance off him and
prepared for the next command.
"Headbutt, Cubone!"
"Coinflip, Chance!"
"Coinflip?" everyone remarked.
Chance pulled out his trusty coin and threw it into the air. At the
height of the flip the light reflected off the coin and a devastating
Thunder attack ripped through the gym's ceiling and crashed down with
Cubone at ground zero!
"Yeah!" Chet cried out. The Coinflip's random effect paid off big
time! Or so he thought. The smoke cleared, revealing Cubone standing,
tapping his foot and shaking his head. Then a sudden revelation hit
Chet. "Awww! Electric attacks don't effect ground types!"
Cubone then charged head-long into Chance, pressing him into Chet's
platform.
"Scratch attack, Chance!"
Chance unsheathed his claws and raked them against the only exposed
part of Cubone's face, his eyes. Cubone let up on Chance and backed
up, hands over his eyes. He then moved his hands away, revealing some
nasty scars and a nasty scowl. With slow, burning anger, Cubone picked
his club back up and stared a hole through Chance.
"Bone club, Cubone!"
"Coinflip, Chance!"
With a cry of rage, Cubone held his club above his head and charged at
Chance. Chance flipped his coin into the air. With the coin still in
the air, Cubone slammed his club into Chance's gut then shoulder-
checked him into the wall. The coin reached the hieght of its flight
and began to fall as Cubone rammed the club into Chance's gut again and
again.
the coin hit the ground with the apparent force of a comet. The arena
shook and the ground split apart. With Cubone distracted, Chance used
his claws to scramble up the wall. As the fissure drew closer, Cubone
attempted to follow Chance, but to no avail as he fell backward into
the gaping pit.
Cubone found that the pit wasn't as deep as he thought. In fact, it
wasn't deep at all. He sat up, only to have a piece of cieling fall
and hit him in the head, knocking him out. Cubone disappeared in a red
beam.
"That was pretty good," Ian commented. "But now it's time to bring out
the big guns. Go, Thor!"
With a flick of the wrist, Ian deployed Thor, his male Nidoran.
"Cute," said Chet. "But let's see how he stands up to Chance's
Coinflip!"
Chance rushed in and retrieved his coin. He slid to a stop, flipped his
coin, and exploded. The attacked missed Thor.
"Aw, man," lamented Chet. "I'm only left with Flak, but where is he?"
As if on cue, a loud flushing sound could be heard as Flak the Squirtle
stepped out of a nearby restroom. Just about everyone sweatdropped.
"Okaaaaay..." Chet said. "Attack that Nidoran!"
Flak saluted and charged at Thor.
"Thunderbolt, Thor."
Flak was out in two seconds.
"'Ell, tha' wuz anti-climatic," Clyde, the grungey one, pointed out.
Chet recalled Flak and went down to collect Chance. Giovanni applauded
him.
"That was an excellent match," Giovanni stated. "You did pretty well
for a trainer at your level. Getting a Meowth to use a Metronome
attack, three times no less, is an impressive feat. I like to give you
a position in my... organization."
"Really?" asked Chet.
"We can help you get ahead in the Pokemon League," offered
Giovanni. "What do you say?"
"Nah," Chet said, picking up Chance and turning to leave. "I think
I'll do on my own. Thanks anyway."

"I can't believe it," Maxine said, pacing about her cell. "I can't
believe some duct-crawling, pervert kid ratted us out. And we were so
close, too. But you had to take that shower and make me wait for you
so we could discuss out plans. Real smooth, Hera."
"We were fools to think we could over-throw Giovanni," Hera said,
reclining against the cell wall. "It was only a matter of time before
Giovanni found us out anyway."
"You keep telling yourself that," Maxine said, shaking her head. "But
our plan was rock-solid, foolproof even!"
"Those who make foolproof designs often underestimate the ingenuity of
fools," Giovanni said as he walked into view. "And, fools or not, I am
the head of Team Rocket for a reason. I'm also feeling quite
charitable today. I'm giving you one last chance. You're going to
Pewter City, where you will recieve further instructions upon your
arrival. I believe our good friend Chet will be there as well; You may
want to look him up."
